The Royal Munster Fusiliers, one of the famous Irish infantry regiments disbanded in 1922, had a distinguished history going back to 1756 when its first battle honour was won at Plassey, India. Although it was a unit of the East India Company army and then of the Indian army, it always had close connections with Ireland, large numbers of its soldiers being recruited in the South West of the country. From 1861, when control passed to the Crown, the regiment was designated 101st and 104 Foot, and from 1881 the Royal Munster Fusiliers.Twenty two battle honours were earned in India and the East before the regiment took part in the South African War of 1899 to 1902 but it was in the First World War, in Flanders, France, Gallipoli, Macedonia and Palestine, that the Munsters won undying fame. Their monuments still stand in Ireland and they are proudly remembered by generations unborn when they fought their last battles. The Royal Munster Fusiliers Association was formed in 1992 to perpetuate the memory and traditions of the regiment, to study its history and to encourage the collection of regimental memorabilia. Membership is open to all interested persons at an annual subscription of Ten Euro (�10). The Association publishes a journal once a year.
